In order for you to get started right away you will need to use a website host that does most of the work to create your first website. We recommend that you look into HTML when you have spare time and begin to learn about it. Website page design and layout

Our best advice here for beginners and Intermediate users alike is to keep it simple. There are multiple reasons for this. The number one reason is that you want your website accessible and usable by the widest possible audience. Keep in mind that users have different operating systems, browsers, screen sizes, service providers and a host of others technical issues that can affect the way they view your page.

Things to avoid when designing a website page

The top 3 things that can kill your traffic to your site. The top traffic killer online, large detailed and beautiful pictures. Yes indeed, they can make your site appear wonderful to the eye, however they also create a very slow loading page, for dialup and slow connections or users running many multiple tasks. A lot of these visitors will just move on to another site.

The second most popular traffic stopper is having page components that require support software. Popular examples are Java and Adobe Flash. Granted a lot if not most users have this software installed. However this software is constantly updated and changed. Some users may have and old version and not feel like taking the time to update. Others may not have it installed. And finally it is just not necessary to get their interest and is one more thing that makes your page more complex then necessary. In the event that your product or service requires supporting software, such as games or instructional videos. Do not put them on your main page, get your users interest first. Explain the product or service. Display the need for a player or support. Then move them to the page only after they are interested and sure they want to see it.

Third you have to have your visitors trust. Your page should have easily visible links for contact information and a privacy policy. These 2 things are a must have. Other helpful links to build user trust are, an about us page, contact phone number, address, testimonials from users and finally your photo and name as owner of the site. The first 2 items are a must, contact information and a privacy policy. Your contact can be just an email address and a privacy policy is required by most affiliate programs and most companies offering products or services for sale that you may want to deal with.

Advanced website page design tips

Simple things make big differences in the performance of a website. Here are what we consider the 5 most important aspects of a successful online business site.

  • Your Domain and Page Title - Use a top level registered domain, when searching for available names you would like to have, try to secure a name that will be easy for visitors to remember. The use of a hyphen can give you access to a domain that has been taken. Example: buyink.com and buy-ink.com. Your page titles should describe your page and what it offers. Never change your page title once it is online ! It could send your page back to the stone age in the search rankings. If you must have a new title make a new page.
  • Original content - Even if your selling a popular item or service offered on many websites, you must add some original view point and content to your site. There are many ways to do this, it is not unlike a large well known company constantly coming out with new TV commercials for a product that has existed for years. You can describe a benefit of using the product that is not widely known. You can project on the possible future of the product or products like it. The best way to come up with ideas for new approaches is to use the thing that you are promoting yourself. You are unique and will see it differently then others. Let your users know what they will gain from your product.
  • Call to action - It is no good just to sell your users on the value and benefits of your product. You need to close the deal. Especially if it is something available from other sources or even off line. A great way to do this is by offering your visitors something for free if they act now. There are numerous free ebooks, free offers, coupons and discount deals available online from many sources. Or you can come up with an offer of your own. Do not offer an immediate discount it cheapens your product and makes the user feel they should be getting the lower price right up front and tomorrow as well. You can offer a sale price for a reason other then an act now discount. Examples would be a Holiday sale, closeout sale, limited time sale, large wholesale buy out sale etc...
  • Your color scheme - Far to many websites use poor color schemes. You want your text and links to stand out. If the user has an old PC monitor with poor color or has poor eyesight themselves, you want your pages easily readable. Put as much contrast between text links and the background as possible. Black on white is the best contrast for text and dark blue on white for links. You can stray away from black on white as long as you keep your pages easily readable. Do not be one of those websites with pink text on a red background.
  • Costumer contact mailing list - Offer an opt in mailing, both at the closing of a sale and on your pages. Do not abuse the mailing list you build, stay in contact with your customers but do not bombard them with daily, multiple daily or even multiple weekly emails. A once a week email is adequate and works much better then pestering someone, your users time is valuable. You can include a link to request more information in the one weekly email you send.

Common on going home business Website tasks.
The 2 most important tasks you will have to perform on a regular basis.

Regular updates are very important for maintaining a successful home business, update your pages every month or so. Even if there is no new content. This procedure is mainly for search bots to show that someone cares about the site and is maintaining it. If you like, place a last updated message statement on the page, this is a good reminder and also shows visitors that they are looking at a recently updated page. This can be done with text by hand or with a small piece of Java script code.
Below is and automatic Java script update message. You can see the Script in the source code for this page. Select view then page source at the top of your browser window.

Site last updated

Checking your outgoing links regularly. Sites change and links can become non-working dead ends. This is bad for a lot of reasons. Try to click on your links to other sites once a month. This is not for your paid links but content and link exchanges with other sites.
