SEO Search Engine Bot Optimizing Tips

Good SEO Means Visitor Traffic

In this article I will give you my best advice based on my years of experience and research into (SEO) Search engine optimization for websites.

This article does not guarantee you number 1 placement on Google or any other search engines, it will better your chances of being included and ranked well in search results.

Search engines are constantly changing and evolving, some previous methods for SEO are useless. The only one sure thing that remains true is good relevant content that people are interested in and are searching for give the best results.

Site age

There was a time that you could be number one on Google in days or even hours. That time is past. You can still be listed a ranked well on Yahoo and some other search engines very fast, however it requires patience to get a good ranking with Google. Google takes into account the age of a website and how often it has been updated along with many other factors. You should have your site complete and working when you put it online. But if your not going to work regularly on updating the site and adding new features or content, hold back some pages. Add them gradually over the course of serval months.

Page Title

Your page title is one of the most important things to search bots.

  1. Your title should be about 60-80 characters.
  2. It should be relevant to your site content.
  3. Contain at least 2 keywords in your page headlines
  4. It should not include your domain address
  5. It should not contain your page file name mypage.html
  6. Your page title should never be changed after your page is indexed.

Meta Tags

Meta tags do not have the importance that they once had. Some search engines ignore them completely. I recommend at least using the basic tags.
Description Tag
<META name="Description" content="Your page description">
Language Tag
<META http-equiv=Content-Language content=en>
Robot Tag
<META NAME="robot" CONTENT="index,follow">
Character Tag
<META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
Copyright Tag
<META name="Copyright" content="Copyright Your Name">

The keywords tag seems obsolete, the search keywords are taken from page content. You can still use the tag if you like. It can not hurt anything and maybe it will help.

Headline Tags

Use Headlines to describe the main content of your page and the search terms you are shooting for.
Headline tag example:

If you use more then one headline tag, put the H1 tag at the top of the page and smaller tags below it. Use the H1 tag for the main site objective and the smaller H2 and H3 tags for sub categories that relate to your main subject matter.

Minor page issues that matter

Small Things you should not overlook:

  1. Use image tag alt descriptions
  2. Check the page for spelling errors
  3. Do not over do keywords. Keep keywords at about 10 % at most, to many repeated keywords may be looked at like keyword spamming.
  4. Do not use link farms.
  5. Do not buy links that are on unrelated pages.
  6. Submit your site to the DMOZ Open Directory Project
Follow these simple guidelines and you should do well with your search rankings. Above all keep your content original factual and interesting.
