Advertising and Website Promotion using Banner Ads

MyTrafficPro Home Page

You should be aware, that ad images can be blocked by some users and software, so do not rely on banner advertising for your only promotional tool.

How Banner ads work

A banner is an image file, the most popular formats are .gif, .jpeg or .png. They can be created using professional software or even the free paint accessory that comes with windows. The image url is combined with a target url address using HTML code. So that when the image is clicked the user is taken to the target url website address. If your site is hosted for free or by a very low cost hosting provider, you may not be able to host the banner image on site. This is because every time your ad image is viewed it uses server bandwidth. Hosting providers can disable remote image views from other sites to limit band width demand on their servers. There are several ways around this problem. There are free image hosting services and some banner advertising sites allow you to upload an image and host it for you.

Banner image size

The most common banner size used today is 468 x 60 pixels
This is commonly called a Full Banner.
Below is an example of a simple 468 x 60 pixel banner:

Other popular sizes are :
234 x 60 pixel (Half Banner)
300 x 250 (Medium Rectangle)
180 x 150 (Rectangle)
728 x 90 (Leaderboard)
120 x 600 pixel (Skyscraper)
160 x 600 (Wide Skyscraper)
125 x 125 pixel (Square Button)
88 x 31 pixel (Micro Bar or button)
120 x 60 (Button)

It is a good idea to create banners for all the popular sizes and have them ready to deploy. Different website owners will offer different available ad space size options to place your ads.

Here at MyTraffic-Pro.com we do not recommend using or employing technologies such as Java, Shockwave, Flash, animation , sound, or video banners in your ad campaigns.
These technologies may limit some users ability to view your ads.

Measuring your ad campaigns success rate

Your Click Through Rate (CTR) is the main way to judge how effective an ad is. CTRs average about 0.1 percent to as high as .5 percent. Generally the more relevant the site where your ad is shown, the higher the CTR will be. You can also use the Cost Per Sale method to track an ads success rate. This is the number of ads shown to secure one sale.

Where to run banner ad campaigns

Some popular banner ad programs include, PPC Pay Per Click or CPC Cost Per Click ad networks. Free banner exchange programs, where you show other members banners on your site and they in turn show your banners.
